Why is La Fenice special?
La Fenice opened in 1792 in Campo San Fantin, in the San Marco sestiere. Its name, “the phoenix”, proved prophetic: the theatre was destroyed by fire in 1836 and rebuilt, and again in 1996, when it was rebuilt as it was and reopened in December 2003. Verdi’s Rigoletto (1851) and La traviata (1853) had their world premieres here.
Tips for an evening at La Fenice
- Book early for performances during the Carnival: Madama Butterfly (30 January – 9 February) coincides with the Carnival weeks (23 January – 9 February 2027).
- Plan dinner before or after the performance in the San Marco area, and allow time to walk: in Venice everything is on foot or by boat.
- The New Year’s Concert on 1 January is broadcast live on RAI 1 from 12:20, according to the theatre.
- November evenings can bring acqua alta: check the City of Venice tide forecast on the day.
