How to move around Venice, Italy: walking and bridges, how the vaporetto works, traghetto crossings, water taxis, and how to reach the historic center from the airport, the station and Piazzale Roma.
In short
Getting around Venice means walking and using boats: there are no cars in the historic center, so you move on foot across bridges and take the vaporetto, the public water bus run by ACTV, for longer distances and the islands. Lines 1 and 2 run along the Grand Canal; small gondola ferries called traghetti cross it at a few points; water taxis are run by licensed operators. Buses and trains stop at Piazzale Roma and Santa Lucia station, at the edge of the city. This guide comes from Daniela Zarpellon, licensed tourist guide in Venice since 2008.
Yes: walking is the main way to get around Venice, and often the quickest. The historic center is made of six sestieri (San Marco, Castello, Cannaregio, Dorsoduro, San Polo and Santa Croce) linked by hundreds of bridges, most of them with steps.
With luggage, strollers or reduced mobility, bridges are the real obstacle: plan routes that use the vaporetto and check the barrier-free information published by the City of Venice. Learning to read the city is the heart of our private walk Understanding Venice, designed to help you move on your own for the rest of your stay.

The vaporetto is Venice's public water bus, run by ACTV. It serves the Grand Canal, the outer edges of the city and the lagoon islands, from floating stops called imbarcaderi. Each stop shows the lines and their direction: check both before boarding.
Other boats
Three services, often confused.
A gondola ferry that simply crosses the Grand Canal, rowed by two gondoliers. Only a few crossings are active, such as San Tomà and Santa Sofia, and stations and hours change, so check locally.
A private motorboat for your party, run by licensed operators, from the airport or between points in the city. Book only with a licensed operator and agree the details before you board. If a boat is part of your tour, it is a third-party service quoted separately.
The gondola is a ride, not a means of transport. Licensed gondoliers wait at official stations around the city; agree the length of the ride before you start.
Arriving
All entry points are at the edge of the historic center. Check current timetables on the operators' official sites.
| You arrive at | How to reach the historic center |
|---|---|
| Marco Polo airport | By road: ACTV's Aerobus line 5 links the airport with Piazzale Roma. By water: a signposted walkway with a moving sidewalk leads from the terminal to the boat dock, where Alilaguna water buses (color-coded lines, some seasonal) and licensed water taxis leave for the city and the islands. |
| Venezia Santa Lucia station | The station is in the historic center, on the Grand Canal. The Ferrovia vaporetto stop is in front of it; on foot, follow the signs for Rialto. Do not get off at Venezia Mestre, on the mainland, unless you are staying there. |
| Piazzale Roma | The last point reached by cars and buses, across the Ponte della Libertà. Vaporetto stops are on the waterfront; the Ponte della Costituzione links it to the station side. |
| Tronchetto | An island of car parks. The People Mover, an elevated shuttle run by ACTV, links it to Piazzale Roma, with an intermediate stop at Marittima. |
| Cruise terminal | The Marittima stop of the People Mover is next to the passenger terminal. Since 1 August 2021 large ships have been barred from the Giudecca Canal and the route past St Mark's, so docking arrangements change: check with your cruise line where your ship arrives. |
Within the historic center, walk: between St Mark's and the Rialto you are usually faster on foot than waiting for a crowded boat. Use the vaporetto for the Grand Canal, for long distances such as the station to Castello, and for the islands.
We do not drive or book transport, but we plan around it. With Venice Stay Design we help you choose where to stay, how to pace your days and which passes make sense for your plans; you then book everything directly. The Grand Canal private boat tour uses a licensed operator, quoted separately.

Not always. Inside the historic center most visitors walk. The vaporetto is useful for the Grand Canal, for long distances, with luggage and for the lagoon islands.
Line 1 stops at almost every landing on the Grand Canal between Piazzale Roma and San Marco, then continues to the Lido. Line 2 also runs along the Grand Canal with fewer stops. Check current routes on the ACTV website.
By bus, ACTV's Aerobus line 5 reaches Piazzale Roma. By water, Alilaguna water buses and licensed water taxis leave from the airport's boat dock, reached on foot from the terminal. Check timetables and fares on the operators' official sites.
A traghetto is a gondola ferry that crosses the Grand Canal at a few fixed points. It is a short public crossing, not a gondola ride. Crossings and hours change, so check locally.

«Daniela is an excellent guide, extremely knowlegeable concerning Venetian history and culture. She gave us a 4 hour walking tour of Venice, including the St. Mark’s basilica. She answered all of our questions. We gained an appreciation of the City of Venice. If I could give her 6 stars, I would.»
«Daniela is an incredible guide, very knowledgeable about the history and the neighborhoods of Venice. She kept us entertained and charmed, was always patient- even when interrupted by random questions from random other tourists. We highly recommend her as an expert guide.»
«We had a wonderful and positive experience touring the St. Peter’s Basilica and the Doge’s Palace with Daniela! She gave us the historical context and background information related to these sites and Venice in general, so that we walked away with a more in-depth understanding of this unique and very interesting city that is rich in history. Daniela was very patient and understanding when we arrived late at our accommodation where she met us (due to train delay, getting lost trying to find our accommodation, etc). It was a real pleasure getting to know Venice from Daniela, and we highly recommend her private tours!!! Much love from us in Toronto and Vancouver, Daniela!»

«Ho visitato la mostra "La fabbrica del Rinascimento" a Vicenza con Daniela ed è stata una bellissima esperienza: lei è molto competente, interessante e mai banale, con quel pizzico di digressioni che arricchiscono la spiegazione collegandola ad altre vicende e situazioni storico-artistiche. Con lei la mostra ha rappresentato la mia città in uno dei periodi di maggior splendore e vivacità che abbia mai vissuto. La consiglio assolutamente.»
