In short

Why visit the Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice?

The Gallerie dell'Accademia is the museum of Venetian painting, from the fourteenth to the eighteenth century, housed in the former Scuola della Carità at the foot of the Accademia Bridge in Dorsoduro. Here you see Giorgione's Tempest, Titian's Presentation of the Virgin, Tintoretto's Miracle of the Slave and Veronese's Feast in the House of Levi. Book tickets on the official site and check opening times before you go. Licensed guide Daniela Zarpellon, with a degree specialized in art history, can build the gallery into a tailor-made private tour; the quote is free, with a reply within 24 hours.

A short history of the Accademia

The Accademia di Belle Arti of Venice was founded on 24 September 1750 as a school for painters, sculptors and architects, with a collection of works for students to study. Under Napoleonic rule a decree of 1807 refounded it and moved it into the complex of the Carità, where it still is.

The galleries opened to the public on 10 August 1817, filled in part with altarpieces and canvases from churches, monasteries and confraternities closed in those years. The museum became independent from the art school in 1879; the school moved to the former Ospedale degli Incurabili in 2004.

The building itself is part of the story. It joins three institutions: the Scuola Grande di Santa Maria della Carità, one of the great lay confraternities of Venice, the church of Santa Maria della Carità and the monastery of the Canonici Lateranensi, begun by Andrea Palladio in 1561 and never completed.

The masterpieces

What to see in the Gallerie dell'Accademia

The collection follows Venetian painting in roughly chronological order. These are the works we never skip.

  1. Giovanni Bellini and the San Giobbe Altarpiece

Bellini's large altarpiece for the church of San Giobbe shows the Virgin enthroned among saints in a painted chapel of gold mosaic. It is the moment Venetian painting learns to build space with light and color.

  2. Carpaccio's Legend of Saint Ursula

Nine large canvases painted by Vittore Carpaccio for the Scuola di Sant'Orsola, a confraternity under the patronage of the Loredan family. Ships, ambassadors and bedrooms turn a medieval legend into a portrait of late fifteenth-century Venice.

  3. The Miracles of the True Cross

Painted from 1496 for the Scuola Grande di San Giovanni Evangelista by Gentile Bellini, Carpaccio and others, these canvases include Gentile's Procession in St Mark's Square, a precious record of the Piazza and the Basilica as they looked around 1500.

  4. Giorgione's Tempest

A small panel painted around 1506–1508 for the Venetian patrician Gabriele Vendramin, and still without an agreed meaning: a soldier, a nursing mother, a flash of lightning over a city. X-rays show that Giorgione first painted another female figure where the young man now stands. Nearby hangs his Old Woman (La Vecchia).

  5. Titian's Presentation of the Virgin

Painted in 1534–1538 for the Sala dell'Albergo of the Scuola della Carità, it still hangs in the room it was made for: one of the rare chances to see a Titian in its original setting. Elsewhere in the galleries is his late, dramatic Pietà.

  6. Tintoretto's Miracle of the Slave

Saint Mark plunges headfirst from the sky to free a slave condemned to torture. The canvas, completed in 1548 for the Scuola Grande di San Marco, was the young Tintoretto's first major public success; you can follow him further at the Scuola Grande di San Rocco near the Frari.

  7. Veronese's Feast in the House of Levi

Painted in 1573 as a Last Supper for the refectory of the Dominicans at Santi Giovanni e Paolo, it drew Veronese before the Inquisition for its crowd of servants, dwarves and soldiers. Rather than repaint it, he changed the title. Its size alone, more than twelve meters wide, stops you in your tracks.

Leonardo da Vinci's Vitruvian Man belongs to the Accademia's collection of drawings but, for conservation reasons, is shown only for a few weeks every several years. Rooms and displays change: we check what is on view when we plan your visit.

Practical tips

Planning your visit to the Accademia

Before you go

  • Book on the official site of the Gallerie dell'Accademia, especially for weekends and holidays.
  • Choose a few rooms to see well rather than walking past everything.
  • Combine it with Dorsoduro: the Peggy Guggenheim Collection and Santa Maria della Salute are a short walk away.

Good to know

  • Opening times vary: we always check them when we prepare your tour.
  • Entrance tickets are not included in the guide fee; Daniela tells you which ones to book and when; you book them directly.
  • Rooms can close for restoration or rehanging, and some works travel to exhibitions.

How to visit the Accademia with a private guide

A great gallery can be tiring without a thread. With a guide, the Accademia becomes a story: how Venetian painters swapped gold for color and light, what the confraternities asked of their artists, and how a painting could land its author before the Inquisition.

Daniela Zarpellon studied foreign languages and literatures at the University of Verona with a specialization in art history, and has been guiding since 2008. Her Dorsoduro private tour, about 2.5–3 hours, explores the area around the gallery, from the Squero di San Trovaso to the Salute. Ask us to include the Accademia itself in a tailor-made private tour: we plan the rooms around your interests, in English, Italian or French.

FAQ

Gallerie dell'Accademia: your questions

Is the Gallerie dell'Accademia worth visiting?

If you are interested in painting, yes: it holds the core of Venetian art from Bellini to Tiepolo, including Giorgione's Tempest and Titian's Presentation of the Virgin. A focused visit of a few rooms is often more rewarding than a long one.

Can I see Leonardo's Vitruvian Man in Venice?

The drawing belongs to the Gallerie dell'Accademia, but for conservation reasons it is displayed only for short periods every few years. Check the museum's official site for any current display.

What is the difference between the Accademia and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection?

The Accademia covers Venetian painting from the fourteenth to the eighteenth century; the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, a short walk away in Dorsoduro, is devoted to twentieth-century art. Both can fit in a day, with a pause in between.

Can a private guide take us inside the Accademia?

Yes. Daniela can include the gallery in a tailor-made private tour, planned around the works you most want to see. Entrance tickets are booked separately, and she helps you choose the time.

How much does a private tour of the Accademia cost?

Every private tour is quoted individually because it is tailor-made. The quote depends on length, number of guests, language, season and any third-party services; entrance tickets are separate. It is free and no-obligation, with a reply within 24 hours.

«Daniela is an excellent guide, extremely knowlegeable concerning Venetian history and culture. She gave us a 4 hour walking tour of Venice, including the St. Mark’s basilica. She answered all of our questions. We gained an appreciation of the City of Venice. If I could give her 6 stars, I would.»

Pamela DixonOctober 2026 · Google

«We had a wonderful and positive experience touring the St. Peter’s Basilica and the Doge’s Palace with Daniela! She gave us the historical context and background information related to these sites and Venice in general, so that we walked away with a more in-depth understanding of this unique and very interesting city that is rich in history. Daniela was very patient and understanding when we arrived late at our accommodation where she met us (due to train delay, getting lost trying to find our accommodation, etc). It was a real pleasure getting to know Venice from Daniela, and we highly recommend her private tours!!! Much love from us in Toronto and Vancouver, Daniela!»
