Why start your stay in Venice by understanding the city?

Venice is not hard to love, but it can be hard to use. Streets end at the water, two places with the same name sit on opposite sides of town, and the map on your phone struggles between tall walls. Many visitors spend their first day lost between Rialto and San Marco and their last day realizing what they missed.

This walk turns that around. I give you a mental map of the city and the vocabulary that goes with it: a calle is a street, a campo a square, a fondamenta a quay along a canal, a rio terà a canal that was filled in, a sotoportego a passage under a building. You learn to read the painted street signs, the nizioleti, and to understand addresses, which are numbered through each sestiere rather than along the street.

The goal is simple: in the days that follow, you explore on your own, with confidence and freedom, without getting lost and without constantly checking a map app. Along the way we taste local specialties the way Venetians do, far from the tourist circuit, and at the end you receive a personalized map with my suggestions for the rest of your stay.

The route

A route through how Venice works

A typical route between San Marco, Castello, Rialto and San Polo. The starting point and focus adapt to where you are staying and what you want to do next.

The six sestieri
San Marco, Castello, Cannaregio, Dorsoduro, San Polo and Santa Croce: we start by placing your hotel or apartment on the map and seeing how the Grand Canal divides the city in two.
Calli, campi and nizioleti
Behind San Marco we follow a sequence of narrow calli and open campi, and learn to use landmarks, wells and church bell towers to keep our bearings when the signs run out.
Campo Santa Maria Formosa and residential Castello
A broad campo where neighborhood life still happens: children playing, wellheads that once collected rainwater, and the logic of a parish as the basic unit of Venetian life.
Rialto Bridge
The stone bridge designed by Antonio da Ponte and built between 1588 and 1591 replaced a series of wooden crossings. For centuries it was the only way across the Grand Canal on foot.
San Giacomo di Rialto and the market
Tradition says San Giacometto is the oldest church in Venice; around it grew the city's commercial heart. Nearby the Rialto Market and the Pescheria explain how Venice still feeds itself.
The traghetto and the vaporetto
When a traghetto is running, we cross the Grand Canal standing in the ferry gondola, then look at a vaporetto stop: line numbers, directions, and when the boat really saves time.
A taste of Venice, the Venetian way
Along the way we stop where Venetians stop, to taste local specialties as they do, rather than following the tourist circuit of cicchetti tours. Food and drinks are not included in the guide fee.
