How did Venetian families really live in their palaces?
From the outside, a Venetian palace is a façade on the water. Inside, it was a house, a warehouse and a stage for the family's standing. Goods arrived by boat at the water gate and were stored in the androne on the ground floor; offices and service rooms filled the mezzanines; the family received guests on the piano nobile, the noble floor, organized around the portego, a long hall running from the canal façade to the courtyard. The large windows you see from the Grand Canal light exactly that hall.
Venetians called a palace simply ca', house. Many palaces are still privately owned and lived in, and they are usually closed to the public. Visiting one of them with the owners' permission is a rare way to understand what it means to live on a piano nobile today, how a family relates to the water, and how a house built for trade became a home.

Reading the façades
We start in the street and on the quays, learning to date a palace by its windows: Byzantine round arches, Gothic pointed and ogee arches, Renaissance symmetry, Baroque relief.
The water gate
Venetian palaces were designed to be reached by boat. At the water gate you understand why the main entrance faced the canal, how goods and guests arrived, and the place of private gondolas in family life.
The piano nobile and the portego
Upstairs, the noble floor: the portego, the reception rooms, the light from the canal. What it means to live on a piano nobile, then and now.
Meeting the owners, when available
When they are available, the owners, often descendants of noble families, may welcome you and share how their family has lived in the palace. This always depends on their availability and is never part of a fixed program.
Courtyards and gardens, when possible
Hidden behind the walls, courtyards with carved wellheads and, in some palaces, gardens show the private side of Venice that cannot be seen from the street.
An alternative: palace-museums open to the public
If private visits are not available for your dates, or if you wish to add them, the tour can include public palace-museums: Ca' d'Oro, the Gothic "House of Gold"; Ca' Rezzonico, the Museum of 18th-Century Venice; Palazzo Grimani, with its Tribuna; or Palazzo Mocenigo at San Stae.
