In short

Why visit the Frari Basilica in Venice?

The Frari Basilica (Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari) is the great Franciscan Gothic church of Venice, in the San Polo district, and the only place where you can see Titian's Assumption on the high altar it was painted for. It also holds Titian's Pesaro Madonna, Giovanni Bellini's triptych of 1488 and the tombs of Titian and Canova. The basilica has its own visitor ticket; the Scuola Grande di San Rocco, with Tintoretto's great cycle, is a few steps away. Licensed guide Daniela Zarpellon can include both in a tailor-made private tour; the quote is free, with a reply within 24 hours.

A short history of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari

The Franciscan friars, the Frari in Venetian, received the land from the city in 1231. A first church was begun around 1250; the vast brick building you see today replaced it over more than a century and was consecrated on 27 May 1492.

Its bell tower, completed in 1396, is the second tallest in Venice after the Campanile of San Marco. Inside, the plain brick and white stone of a preaching order's church frame some of the richest works of the Venetian Renaissance, commissioned by noble families who wanted their chapels and tombs close to the high altar.

The Frari is still an active parish church. It is also the resting place of Titian, of the composer Claudio Monteverdi and of Doge Francesco Foscari, whose monument stands in the chancel.

Inside the basilica

What to see in the Frari and why it matters

  1. Titian's Assumption of the Virgin

Painted in 1516–1518 and unveiled on 19 May 1518, the Assumption still rises above the high altar it was made for, almost seven meters tall. Seen from the nave, it is framed by the arch of the marble choir screen, so that the Virgin seems to rise through the church itself.

  2. The monks' choir

The wooden choir stalls, carved in 1468 by Marco and Francesco Cozzi, sit inside a marble screen in the middle of the nave: a rare survival in a Venetian church.

  3. The Pesaro Madonna

Painted by Titian in 1519–1526 for Jacopo Pesaro, bishop of Paphos and commander of the papal fleet, it moves the Virgin away from the center of the picture and lifts the eye along a diagonal, under two great columns. It was a bold break with tradition.

  4. Giovanni Bellini's triptych in the sacristy

Signed and dated 1488, Bellini's Madonna and Child with Saints sits in a carved and gilded frame by Jacopo da Faenza. Bellini designed the painted architecture to continue the real frame, so the Virgin seems to sit in a small golden chapel.

  5. Donatello's Saint John the Baptist

A painted wooden statue of 1438, in a chapel beside the high altar: an austere, almost wild figure by the Florentine sculptor.

  6. The monuments to Titian and Canova

Facing each other across the nave are the monument to Titian, made in 1843–1852 by Luigi, Pietro and Andrea Zandomeneghi, and the pyramid of Antonio Canova's monument, built in 1822–1827 by his pupils from a design Canova had prepared for a tomb for Titian that was never made.

The church also holds altarpieces by Bartolomeo and Alvise Vivarini, a Madonna by Paolo Veneziano in the chapter house and the tomb of Doge Nicolò Tron by Antonio Rizzo.

The Scuola Grande di San Rocco and Tintoretto

Behind the apse of the Frari stands the Scuola Grande di San Rocco, the seat of a confraternity devoted to Saint Roch, protector against the plague. Its marble building was completed in 1560.

In 1564 Tintoretto won the competition for the ceiling of the Sala dell'Albergo, and over the following two decades he and his workshop covered the building with canvases. The Crucifixion in the Albergo is one of his greatest works. Upstairs, the Sala Capitolare tells the story from the Old Testament on the ceiling to the life of Christ on the walls; downstairs, the Sala Terrena, painted last, is dedicated to the life of the Virgin.

The Scuola is a separate visit from the Frari, with its own ticket and opening times.

How to visit the Frari with a private guide

The Frari is a place to slow down. Standing in the nave, Daniela shows you how Titian painted the Assumption to be seen through the choir screen, why the Pesaro family wanted their altarpiece to break the rules, and how Venice honored its painters centuries later. Then, at San Rocco, you follow Tintoretto through the confraternity's rooms.

There is no fixed Frari tour: the basilica and the Scuola are added to a tailor-made private tour built around your interests, for your party only, in English, Italian or French. They pair naturally with an orientation walk through San Polo and Rialto, or with a visit to the Gallerie dell'Accademia for a day devoted to Venetian painting. Daniela, a licensed guide, guiding since 2008, with a specialization in art history, tells you which tickets to book and when; you book them directly.

«Daniela is an excellent guide, extremely knowlegeable concerning Venetian history and culture. She gave us a 4 hour walking tour of Venice, including the St. Mark’s basilica. She answered all of our questions. We gained an appreciation of the City of Venice. If I could give her 6 stars, I would.»

«We had a wonderful and positive experience touring the St. Peter’s Basilica and the Doge’s Palace with Daniela! She gave us the historical context and background information related to these sites and Venice in general, so that we walked away with a more in-depth understanding of this unique and very interesting city that is rich in history. Daniela was very patient and understanding when we arrived late at our accommodation where she met us (due to train delay, getting lost trying to find our accommodation, etc). It was a real pleasure getting to know Venice from Daniela, and we highly recommend her private tours!!! Much love from us in Toronto and Vancouver, Daniela!»
