In short

How do you plan a trip to Venice?

To plan a trip to Venice, decide first how many nights you can stay, then where to sleep, then how you will arrive and move around, and only then which sights to book. This Venice travel guide follows that order, one page per question. It is written by Daniela Zarpellon, licensed tourist guide no. 05000058. If you prefer a plan built around you, Venice Stay Design prepares it with you before you leave, and you book everything directly.

Where to start

In what order should you plan a trip to Venice?

Most planning mistakes in Venice come from booking things in the wrong order. This sequence avoids them.

  1. Choose your dates and length of stay

Check the events calendar and decide how many nights you can give the city.

  2. Pick the right area to sleep

Your base decides how many bridges you cross with luggage and how quiet your evenings are. Our guide on where to stay in Venice compares the districts.

  3. Work out how you will arrive and move

There are no cars in the historic center. Read getting around Venice before you choose a transfer.

  4. Shape your days

Group sights by area. A 2- or 3-day itinerary is a good starting point.

  5. Book tickets and guides last

Once the frame is clear, book entrance tickets and any private tour. Opening times vary: we always check them when we prepare your tour.

Would you rather have a plan made around you?

Venice Stay Design is the personal version of these guides: a planning service in which Daniela works out with you where to stay, how to pace your days, how to move and what is worth your time, given your dates, your interests and the people you travel with.

It starts with a short online call, scheduled by email. You then book your accommodation, tickets and any third-party services directly; Daniela gives guidance and books nothing on your behalf.

Private tours

Where does a private tour fit in your trip?

A guided walk is most useful early in your stay, when it helps you read the rest of the city.

Many travelers start with Understanding Venice, a private orientation tour of about 2.5–3 hours: how the sestieri, calli and campi work, the logic of the vaporetto, and what you can skip. Every tour is private, for your own party, in English, Italian or French, and tailor-made: quote on request. Entrance tickets are not included, and boats are run by licensed operators and quoted separately.

FAQ

Planning a trip to Venice: your questions

How far in advance should I plan a trip to Venice?

Book accommodation as soon as your dates are fixed, especially for spring, summer and major events, because the historic center has a limited number of beds. Plan your days and book tickets and guides once the base is set. A few weeks ahead is usually enough for a private tour, but popular dates fill earlier.

Is this Venice in Italy, or Venice in Florida or California?

This guide is about Venice, Italy, the historic city on the lagoon in the Veneto region. Venice, Florida and Venice Beach, California are different places.

Does Venice Stay Design book my hotel or tickets?

No. Venice Stay Design is planning and advice: where to stay, how to pace your days, how to move and what to see or skip. You book accommodation, tickets and third-party services directly, based on that guidance.

Do I need to pay a fee to enter Venice?

Day visitors entering the historic city on set dates pay an access fee. In 2027 the calendar has 72 dates between 26 March and 15 August, according to the City of Venice's official site, cda.ve.it. The 2027 arrangements and exemptions will be announced there by 31 December 2026.

How much does a private guide in Venice cost?

Every private tour is quoted individually because it is tailor-made. The quote depends on length, number of guests, language, season and any boat or third-party services; entrance tickets are separate. It is free and no-obligation, with a reply within 24 hours.

Which languages are the tours and planning in?

Daniela guides and plans in English, Italian and French.

«Daniela is an excellent guide, extremely knowlegeable concerning Venetian history and culture. She gave us a 4 hour walking tour of Venice, including the St. Mark’s basilica. She answered all of our questions. We gained an appreciation of the City of Venice. If I could give her 6 stars, I would.»

«Daniela is an incredible guide, very knowledgeable about the history and the neighborhoods of Venice. She kept us entertained and charmed, was always patient- even when interrupted by random questions from random other tourists. We highly recommend her as an expert guide.»

Pamela DixonOctober 2026 · Google

«We had a wonderful and positive experience touring the St. Peter’s Basilica and the Doge’s Palace with Daniela! She gave us the historical context and background information related to these sites and Venice in general, so that we walked away with a more in-depth understanding of this unique and very interesting city that is rich in history. Daniela was very patient and understanding when we arrived late at our accommodation where she met us (due to train delay, getting lost trying to find our accommodation, etc). It was a real pleasure getting to know Venice from Daniela, and we highly recommend her private tours!!! Much love from us in Toronto and Vancouver, Daniela!»

«Ho visitato la mostra "La fabbrica del Rinascimento" a Vicenza con Daniela ed è stata una bellissima esperienza: lei è molto competente, interessante e mai banale, con quel pizzico di digressioni che arricchiscono la spiegazione collegandola ad altre vicende e situazioni storico-artistiche. Con lei la mostra ha rappresentato la mia città in uno dei periodi di maggior splendore e vivacità che abbia mai vissuto. La consiglio assolutamente.»
