Vicenza
Halfway between Venice and Verona in the Northern Italian region of Veneto, Vicenza is a real hidden, unexpected gem.
This lovely small town is a must-visit if you love architecture and history: home to famous Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio, Vicenza boasts many of his best works. For this reason Vicenza is a UNESCO World Heritage Site!
Vicenza was under the domination of the Venician Republic from the early part of the 15th century for the following 400 years.
You will see a pleasing blend of architecture in Vicenza, with Palladio’s works, influenced by classical Roman architecture, close to Venetian Gothic buildings.
Among Palladio’s most famous buildings in Vicenza are:
- Basilica Palladiana – the seat of the medieval town hall was enriched by Palladio’s loggias during the Renaissance
- Teatro Olimpico – the world’s first indoor theatre in the world with a still authentic trompe-l’œil onstage scenery
Just 10 minutes from Vicenza you can also find
- Villa Capra La Rotonda – one of the world’s most famous buildings that has been partially or fully replicated numerous times in Europe and the United States.
